You: A psychotherapist, nurse, allied healthcare professional, or educator who wants to learn basics so you can counsel clients concerning sexual issues. But you’ve found it difficult to find the right training program, one that is thorough but that doesn’t require all of the expense and time away from home required by most training.
Us: The Buehler Institute offers the answer: online learning. Log in any time to delve into a unique, 75-hour program that covers 90% of the Core Knowledge Concepts in Sexuality required by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Sex Therapists, and Counselors*, including:
- Sexual development
- Sexual anatomy
- Defining sexual health
- Naming familial and social factors that contribute to sexual identity
- Diagnosis and treatment of major sexual disorders
- Understanding and treating the LGBTQ client
- Understanding and treating the sexually diverse client
- Fostering intimacy skills and eroticism
- Attaining knowledge in medical factors that affect sexuality
- Treating problematic sexual behaviors, e.g., sexual addiction and compulsive sexual behaviors
- Assessing and treating sexual problems resulting from sexual abuse and assault
- Recalling history in the field of sexology
- Describing principles and methods of sexuality research
The online program is designed to fulfill 75 of the 90 required hours of education in core knowledge for AASECT, but any psychotherapist who wants a better understanding of treating sexual problems is encouraged to enroll, as well as sex educators and counselors seeking AASECT partial fulfillment of educational requirements. Please see the Blended Learning Programs if you want to fulfill all 150 of the AASECT educational requirements.
The Buehler Institute is approved for continuing education by the American Psychological Association and California Board of Registered Nursing (CEP #16394). The Buehler Institute is also approved by AASECT as an Organizational Provider. Californians, please note that the BBS accepts CEUs that are APA approved.
Dr. Stephanie Buehler, Director of The Buehler Institute, is a licensed psychologist in the state of California (PSY 17609). She is also an AASECT certified sex therapist and supervisor of sex therapists and counselors. Dr. Buehler is the author of What Every Mental Health Professional Needs to Know about Sex and Sex, Love, and Mental Illness: A Couples Guide to Staying Connected. A new book is due out in 2017 entitled Counseling Couples Before, During, and After Pregnancy: Sexuality and Intimacy.
Dr. Buehler is a graduate of UCLA (B.A.), USC (M.P.W.), CSULA (Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential), Pepperdine University (M.A.), and Alliant/California School of Professional Psychology-San Diego (Psy.D.). She worked for a decade as an elementary school teacher in the inner city of Los Angeles; a decade for Teacher Created Materials as a freelance author and editor; and for the past fifteen years has been in private practice in Orange County, CA.
How It Works
The program consists of four Modules. Modules are divided into Courses, and Courses are divided into Lessons. Within the Courses, you will find a variety of learning activities, including reading Dr. Buehler’s textbook, What Every Mental Health Professional Needs to Know about Sex, powerpoint lectures, video clips, website visits, and journal articles chosen both for content and interest.
Activities are designed to each be completed within an hour or less. You could complete a lesson each day on your lunch hour, or you can “binge learn” and complete several . Log on at your desk, in your jammies, or anywhere at all, any time of day that is convenient to you.
Once you are enrolled, and before the first quarter begins, you will be sent detailed instructions on how to log into our customized learning management system (we are using Talent LMS). Then the fun begins, as learning modalities are varied:
- Reading Dr. Buehler’s popular text, What Every Mental Health Professional Needs to Know about Sex
- Watching powerpoint videos narrated by Dr. Buehler
- Watching video clips available on the learning management system
- Reading academic and popular articles
When you understand the material, take a quiz–you have two chances to pass. Once you complete all four modules, you will receive via mail an attractive certificate that documents your knowledge.
***Why 75 hours and not the full 90 required by AASECT? If you read the fine print of the Core Knowledge Areas for AASECT, you can only earn 75 of the 90 hours through distance learning.
